I had always been interested in the medical field, but I never gave it more than a thought because I was too worried about where my next drink was coming from, instead of focusing on an actual career. Hi, my name is Ashley, and I am a recovering alcoholic. I have over 6 years of sobriety and am stronger than ever! When my sister passed away from an overdose close to 2 years ago, I found myself completely changed. I went from being a recovering alcoholic to a woman who wants to help people live their best lives, clean and sober. I will honor my sister by helping others find the life that she deserved.
I had spoken to a helpful and patient man about 5 years ago who took the time to explain everything, set me up to take the admissions test, and introduced me to so many nice people. I was all set to start that next term, then I had to have hip surgery, so that set me back. He was the person I contacted when I was ready to start this journey, and I will forever be grateful to him. I knew Hondros College of Nursing was where I was meant to attend.
I can honestly say that my determination surpasses any obstacle that may come my way. I tell myself that I will study, that I will pass my quizzes and exams, and that I will pass this last term and graduate! Additionally, I have learned that being organized and having strict time management is key.
I have had a few friends reach out and ask about how things are going with adjusting to a brand-new college career at 41 years old, with no previous medical experience. They often share how they also want to do what really motivates them. I tell them that a career in healthcare is the best route to take because the possibilities are endless! I always say that if you are thinking about it, then your heart is already in it! You just have to put the work in. It's never too late to be brand new! I tend to end every conversation with "follow your heart and do what sets your soul on fire!"
